Love Canal
Once a great idea, destined to be a feat of enginering. Now surrounded by a chain-link fence. The love canal was the idea of William T. Love. He had the idea to connect the Niagara river and Lake Ontario via Canal. It failed due to the depression in the 1980's. The canal became just a bit of water, popular for summer vacations. Until the spot was sold to Hooker electrochemical Co. The canal soon became a dumping ground for toxic waste. There was also rumour of the U.S Army dumping there for chemical warfare experiments. The Canal was soon filled to the top with 21,000 tons of toxic waste. Hooker came up with the idea to put a cap over the Canal. It seemed to be a great plan. And looked like it was going to work. Until residents started to complain about smells and feeling sick. President Jimmy Carter soon declared the area to be in a state of emergency. And evacuated pregenant woman and children under the age of 2. The area soon became a hazard. The rest of the country watched on there tv screens as this neighbourhood fell apart.
